Bill “Sully” Sullivan: Disneyways Magical Spotlights: Disney Luminaries

Published July 17, 2019 by Disneyways.com

Disneyways Magical Spotlights: Disney Luminaries ~  Bill “Sully” Sullivan

He spent almost 40 years with the company, starting as a ticket-taker on the Jungle Cruise in 1955 and ending his career as Vice President of the Magic Kingdom in 1994. You can get his book and learn all about him in detail, by clicking below on our affiliate link.

From Jungle Cruise Skipper to Disney Legend 40 Years of Magical Memories at Disney

My first selfie with Disney Legend Bill “Sully” Sullivan taken in 2014

After studying architecture in the 1950s, Sully actually got his first job in the aircraft industry. But then, after tuning in to ABC’s live broadcast of Disneyland’s opening and dedication, he made a decision that would change his life forever.
On Sunday, July 17, 1955, William “Sully” Sullivan was tuned in to ABC-TV. “I watched the opening ceremonies for Disneyland. The following Saturday I went down and applied for a job. “Monday I quit Northrop Aircraft, and Tuesday I reported to work as a ticket-taker at the Jungle Cruise.” Sully was just 19 years old at the time.

As he worked at the Jungle Cruise for nearly three years, Bill earned the title of “jungle bunny”—an unofficial name given to the attraction’s hosts in the ’50s. This experience gave him the opportunity to move around the park, rising through the ranks of park operations and supervising various attractions.

In fact, Bill helped pull off some of the most historic events in Disney history. Bill soon earned a place on the opening team for the 1960 Winter Olympic Games in Squaw Valley, for which Walt Disney served as chairman of pageantry.

What did Bill think of the man, Walt Disney?

“Walt was a really warm individual,” Sully remembered fondly. “He had a great sense of humor, and he loved people. He was an executive, but not what you perceive as an ‘executive.’ He was a real team guy.”

A few years later, he became assistant manager for the groundbreaking Disney attractions at the 1964–65 New York World’s Fair and eventually helped with several famous Disney film premieres. Examples include the premiers for Mary Poppins at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre (1964) and The Happiest Millionaire at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre (1967).

Sully also helped develop the world’s largest private construction project – two times! But first, he moved to Orlando in 1969. From here, the construction plans began for the park’s opening day in 1971. Sully spent several years assisting with the preparation and opening of Walt Disney World, which was the world’s largest private construction effort until the development of EPCOT Center a decade later. For Epcot, Sully coordinated operational design input and installation of owner-furnished equipment as as director of PICO (Project Installation and Coordination Office) and, after Epcot opened in 1982, he served as director of park operations. The two largest construction projects in the world, and Sully was there…preparing, coordinating, and assisting with it all!

But Sully wasn’t finished yet. In 1987, still working hard and growing his career,  next up he would be named vice president of the Magic Kingdom, and was responsible for operation of the Park. It was a long list of operations including attractions, merchandising, transportation, entertainment, ticket sales, guest relations, costuming, foods, custodial, maintenance, planned work, and even horticulture.

Sully’s contributions have earned him two tributes on Main Street, U.S.A.! He’s got a window on both coasts. One for Disney World and one for Disneyland! In Orlando at Magic Kingdom Park, look for the one that lists him as a charter member of the “Windermere Fraternal Hall.” Bill actually served as Vice President of the Magic Kingdom from 1987 until 1993, during which he oversaw the openings of experiences from Delta Dreamflight and Magic Journeys to Mickey’s Birthdayland and Splash Mountain. In Disneyland, you will find a window on Main Street listing him as Chief Guide of “Sully’s Safaris & Guide Service” (a reference to his first role at Disneyland.)

Sully retired in 1993 after 38 years with Disney, and without a single regret. “If I had to do it all over,” he said, “I’d do it all again tomorrow.” He would be named a Disney Legend in 2005.

New Series! Disneyways Magical Spotlights: Disney Luminaries

New Series! Disneyways Magical Spotlights: Disney Luminaries

These blog posts will be just one aspect of “Disneyways Magical Spotlights: Disney Luminaries” with our ultimate goal being to bring you closer to each Disney celebrity – in the form of several magical layers and multi-media experiences. In the sea of Disney fan media out there – my vision is to bring you an experience you won’t get any place else.

You might be asking yourself – how is this even possible?

Well, many of our spotlighted luminaries are in the business of making dreams come true. Many have been doing it for decades. And then … there’s me. Disneyways treasures you won’t find any place else. I will be adding my own special Krista Joy “magic” to each magical spotlight feature.

I will have the goal in mind of helping you to feel like you know each luminary personally – through the multiple magical layers we will bring you. It is critical for Disney fans to be aware of these amazing people and learn more about them, because they contribute so much to the Disney magic that we enjoy today. The stories of who they are and why – are just fascinating – and that’s an added bonus!

Other magical spotlight layers on these famous Disney Legends, authors, voices and more (many I call friends of mine) will include:

Video Interviews

DVD Documentaries through our partners at ThemeParkology.com

Personal Audio Interviews (on air with Krista) for our global online radio show “Living The Dream Podcast” with syndication on other broadcasts coming soon….

and even LIVE EVENTS.

Sometimes it will be events that I am hosting, sometimes it will be news on events you and I may both attend as guests. I want you to meet the luminaries in person so you can start your own “Wall of Fame.” There’s even talk of cruises, musical concerts and more. I hope you can join me for it all, but even when things don’t fit in your schedule to be there in person, I will offer you live coverage whenever possible, so it feels like you are right there. Let the “Disneyways Magical Spotlights: Disney Luminaries” series begin…and in the words of Walt Disney may “all who come to this happy place… welcome.”

SNEAK PEEK! 2019 H2O Glow Nights at Typhoon Lagoon Water Park Shows You The Glow

Published May 29, 2019 by Disneyways.com

Well I’m super excited I FINALLY found someone to go with me… to the first ever H2O GLOW NIGHT (for 2019 anyhow!) at Typhoon Lagoon!! Thank you Mariel  – for being my “date” tonight – you’re a real pal. I am ready to get my glow on – how about you? These H2O glow nights started in 2018 but the 2019 season won’t open to the public until tomorrow, May 30th 2019!!

Toy Story 4 is coming out soon so there will be lots of promotion for that. There was even talk of “FORKY” appearing… as an inflatable? Weird, I know … but that is the word on the streets.

FORKY from Toy Story 4

Watch my social media tonight for more on that. Links to everything are HERE.

I did a TON of research and am presenting you with my favorite tips. This is the stuff I am looking forward to, gathered all for you!  I am very nervous… as I really have no idea what to expect. I have never been to Typhoon Lagoon (GASP!!… I know… can you believe it?? Just no desire to go!) For the first time in probably 15 years…I bought a brand new swimsuit for the occasion.  Watch for me in the videos and pics coming to Disney Parks Blog. Honestly, I think it is the idea of going under the veil of darkness that sounds very appealing to me!  I wanted to share what I have learned about all this, so far, in case you were wondering about it too. So now YOU can be “in the know”!

IN SHORT…
H20 Glow Nights happen Every Thursday and Saturday from May 30 through August 24, 2019—except for June 20 and are full of Toy Story fun.
These parties last from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM (Guests with event tickets may arrive early, beginning at 6:00 PM) There will be magical food, dessert and drink offerings! Full plates of dinner-type food and other stuff. Check it all out HERE.  Tickets are $59 per person plus tax for adults and $54 per person plus tax for children ages 3 to 9, when purchased in advance. On the days of the event, the ticket price will be $69 per person plus tax for adults and $64 per person plus tax for children. Tickets are not required for children under age 3. Nifty food and drink offerings will all (of course) cost extra!

THE PERKS!
This extra ticket event features glow-in-the-dark fun after the sun goes down with shorter wait times for the park’s waterslides and a DJ dance party.

Special effects lighting will once again transform the park.

Buzz Lightyear, Woody and Jessie will all be there for some character meet-and-greets in case you don’t catch them at Toy Story Land. We are talking wait times as low as 10 minutes!

ADULTS ONLY special party area called The Wharf, where you can enjoy entertainment and adult libations (for an extra charge).

Bathtub Party Sundae ©Disney

OH MY GOODNESS– The Bathtub Party Sundae (are you kidding me? This sounds amazing!)) Vanilla ice cream, confetti cake, whipped cream, and chocolate rubber ducks topped with sprinkles and served in a novelty bathtub dish. (Side note: if you are obsessed with Disney Food like I am… be sure to click my link to Disney Food Blog Guide on our menu – to the right of this page! If you purchase one of the online guides through my link – DFB sends me a portion of the proceeds. It doesn’t cost you extra – in fact there are sales and discounts going all the time!)

Party capacity is limited, and the low crowds in the park will be a huge plus. Shorter lines!!

Character Fun!! Because of the short lines -characters spend more time interacting.

Exclusive new merchandise collection includes a glow-in-the-dark T-shirt and a Tervis tumbler and features artwork inspired by the event.

You get plenty of party time to experience all the exclusives offered.

VIP feel (yeah… give me some of that!)

Favorite TIPS!!

Make the most of your ticket and arrive when “doors open” at 6 p.m. While the party doesn’t officially start until 8 p.m., so this gives you a head start on rides.

It is suggested that you separate your night into wet and dry. Stow your suits in a locker while you eat dinner and mingle with characters. Keep your phone or camera with you for pictures throughout the DRY fun. Then go back to the locker to return stuff, change, and get WET!

Don’t forget to wear your MagicBand if you want to visit photopass photographers.  Yep MagicBands are waterproof, however I would suggest securing it with a rubber band or one of those little belts you can buy for them now.  If you don’t have a MagicBand, no worries, the photographer will give you a PhotoPass card you can wear around your wrist. This sounds like a great idea for the regular parks too – so hold on to it for another day!

Here’s what “official” Disney has to say:

“With glowing beach balls, inner tubes and other lighting effects, Disney H2O Glow Nights is a rare opportunity for Guests to experience Typhoon Lagoon under the moonlight. On select nights beginning May 30, 2019, Typhoon Lagoon becomes a luminous, nighttime hotspot featuring a DJ Dance Party on the beach, plus special character meetings with Buzz, Woody and Jessie from Pixar’s “Toy Story,” as they visit Typhoon Lagoon for the first time. And let’s not forget about the host, Partysaurus Rex, who is inviting Guests to this one-of-a-kind experience.

Guests can also play party games, try unique food and beverage treats and enjoy all attractions at the water park with minimal wait times, including Crush ‘n’ Gusher, a thrilling water coaster and Miss Adventure Falls, the newest attraction at Typhoon Lagoon.

While the kids are splashing about, adults can visit The Wharf. This adults-only oasis is unique to Disney H2O Glow Nights and is only available when Typhoon Lagoon transforms at nightfall.

I’ll be posting my thoughts on social media – for sure. Leave me a question, thought or comment on facebook or right here. OK DISNEY… SHOW ME THE GLOW!!!!

Meet Our Newest (and Youngest!) Guest Authors!

Published July 2, 2018 by Disneyways.com

We are always on the lookout for fantastic guest authors to add to our Disneyways.com family, and you know we only bring you the very best. Who better to write tips for traveling to Disney World with kids then…well…actual kid authors who love to write about traveling to Disney?! We are super excited to announce our partnership with Momosa Publishing to bring you super informative blog posts and articles from Austin Reich and Tyler Reich. Be on the lookout for a whole series of posts from the boys, coming to Disneyways! Check out the graphics below to read more about Austin and Tyler, and follow the whole series of books on Facebook!

Here is some of the media buzz that’s started The Adventures of Real Animals in the Most Magical Place on Earth, books written by Austin and Illustrated by Tyler (available for purchase on Amazon and everywhere books are sold!)

“The stories are cute and fun, but if you like some practical advice there’s plenty of that too.” ~ WDW Magazine

“Probably the coolest thing about these books is that they were “created by kids, for kids!” How many kids do you know have written, illustrated and published their own book series? Not many! Walt Disney said “If you can dream it, then you can do it” and that’s exactly what these brothers have done. They came up with an idea, and executed it all the way through publication and their books are available everywhere books are sold!” ~ WDW Hints

“Brothers Tyler Reich and Austin Reich noticed the cute little critters too – and this talented duo has begun making the sweetest storybooks about what our furry friends are up to at WDW.” ~ It’s a FanGirl World

“While entertaining, the story that Austin and Tyler have created can be used as another tool to help you teach your children about being aware of their surroundings and staying with the family.” ~ Enjoying The Days
