My Magical Red Carpet Evening: Walt Before Mickey Movie Premiere

Published June 22, 2015 by Disneyways.com

One of my dreams came true this month. Since I wasn’t able to take you all with me, I have been wondering how in the world I could put it in to words in an attempt to convey what it was like. I’m just a regular person – not really special in any way (the Skyway Film Festival was open to the public!) but, I felt very privileged and honored to “walk on the red carpet” in June of 2015 for the World Premiere of the film, Walt Before Mickey.

IMG_3154

Not only was I able to check this once in a lifetime experience off the bucket list – but it also involved Disney. Somebody pinch me!

IMG_3135

I want to thank my good friend Adria, President of the World Chapter of the Disneyana Fan Club, for sending over these questions regarding the recent movie premier that several of our club members attended Walt Before Mickey. Her email inspired me with a format to put all of this together in words and pictures for you today.

As a reminder, this film is based on the book “Walt Before Mickey” and covers the early years of Walt Disney’s career. Shot in Florida, Walt Before Mickey, which stars Thomas Ian Nicholas, Jon Heder, David Henrie and Jodie Sweetin, chronicles the life of Walter Disney from his childhood in Missouri to his start as an animator. Directed by Khoa Lee as his first feature length film,  this amazing movie is based on the book by author Timothy S. Susanin- and forwarded by Diane Disney Miller (Walt’s daughter).

1.) What was your first impression when you arrived at the premiere? The Manatee Performing Arts Center is spectacular, newly remodeled, and comfortable. A very nice lady on staff explained to me that this chandelier is an original – used in the film Gone With the Wind! This beautiful, important fixture looked right at home in this space.

IMG_3173
2.) Was there a lot of pomp and circumstance? Yes, I thought so. The door was held open for us by gentleman in elaborate costumes, looking much like the one Ponce de León may have worn when he discovered Florida. What a nice touch!

3.) Where there a lot of people? How many would you estimate? Yes! I have read that there were 500 people there.

4.) Did you get to meet the producer, director or any of the actors or actresses? Yes. I have known Arthur L. Bernstein and Armando Gutierrez (Executive Producers) for quite some time. We have communicated by phone, facebook, and I have interviewed them in the past. Meeting them in person and getting to hug them (finally) was like seeing old, familiar friends.

5.) What did you think of the movie? I LOVED this movie.

6.) What did you like? The actors did an amazing job and there was SO much attention to detail. The authenticity was incredible. Much of the clothing really was from the early 20th century and great care was taken to care for these costumes. We were all amazed to learn that it was filmed so close to home.

What didn’t you like about it? I know there is a lot of red tape involved, but I would love to see this movie be released nation wide. Every Disney fan should see it.

7.) Any other thoughts you’d like to share? I am just so thankful for this beautiful evening, all the new friends I have met, and how kind everyone was.

8.) If an opportunity like this present again in the future would you like to attend? In a heartbeat!

Disney Parks Podcast Show #85 – An Interview With Jim Korkis Part 1

Published December 11, 2013 by Disneyways.com

I have listened to Jim Korkis speak on many of my favorite podcasts for years, and maybe you have too. I remember seeing Jim at an event at Disney – and just flipping out that I actually got to see him in person! Never in a million years did I dream I would one day be able to speak with him myself. Jim is someone that you can talk to for 5 minutes, and he makes you feel like you have been friends forever. When Jim and I first began communicating – I immediately began teasing and bragging to my friends that “Jim Korkis is my new BFF!”

I am nothing special though, I think he makes most everyone feel that way.

Many of us recognize Jim Korkis as an internationally respected Disney Historian who has written hundreds of articles about all things Disney for over three decades. He is also an award-winning teacher, a professional actor and magician, and the author of several books. For those interested in reading more about Jim Korkis’ “Vault of Walt: Volume 2”, including an excerpt from the book, please click HERE.

The Orlando Water Hole podcast is a local favorite. You can always count on the podcast’s wonderful host, Ben, to keep you up to date on what’s going on here in the town where Mickey Mouse lives. It was such an honor to be included in this esteemed panel!

He joined the Mickey Mouse Club in the first season as a dancer.

November 18, 1978:

This is the first year Mickey has an official birthday! We interviewed Jim Korkis for the Disney Parks Podcast recently. Jim is an amazing wealth of knowledge on all things historic with the Disney company. You can take a look at some of the books he has written all about Disney history HERE. You will definitely want to add them all to your collection if you haven’t already. During the podcast recording, Jim shared with us how there is controversy about what the actual date of Mickey’s birth truly is. However, as a general rule, Disney Archivist Dave Smith has declared that November 18, 1928, was the first general public appearance of Mickey Mouse … thus creating an “official” birth date. Have a magical day!!

How to Look Like Minnie in a Minute

Published October 5, 2013 by Jay

“Hey, I’m a girl and we like to play dress-up.” – Charlize Theron

_________________________

My desire to play dress-up started when I was little. I would raid my mother’s clothes, my grandmother’s costume jewelry, my aunt’s shoe collection, and I would mash together some pretty unique outfits. Sometimes I jammed my brother into said outfits and make him parade around with me. As I grew a little older, I wanted to look like certain characters and people, especially when my family went to themed places. I didn’t go to Disney for the first time until I was in middle school and I’m pretty sure I still tried to dress the part – bedazzled Disney shirts, princess-y skirts and jewelry, you get the idea. The thing is, it’s pretty difficult to wear full Disney costume as an adult (unless you work there. I’m jealous of you if you’re a Princess) at the park and have it work.

This is not nearly as cute when you're an adult.

This dress doesn’t work quite as well on adults  😦

Why should kids have all the fun though? Can’t us big kids dress up too? I think the trick is finding outfits and makeup that show your love of a character (or characters) but that don’t look like they belong on a five-year old. I picked a classic Disney character for my inspriration today – Minnie! She’s cute, fun, and iconic Disney.

First up – outfits! The parks can get pretty hot and involve a lot of walking, so I wanted to choose comfortable outfits that are both cute and functional. For my first Minnie outfit, I went a little retro-teenage with a longer crop top and shorts that you could style as high-waisted or longer legged, depending on the size/fit you buy. A small cross-body or shoulder bag holds essentials without weighing you down or getting in your way.

Minnie Polyvore

What if you want a more grown-up but classic Minnie? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered – and this one includes some accessories!

Minnie2You could also throw in some more pops of red and yellow to get more Minnie color. I decided to stay a little basic with colors because I would rock the second outfit with the makeup look below. You want your makeup to last through a hot and humid park day, and not to spend a lot of time putting it together. I used my fingers to blend foundation across my face and set it with a light dusting of bronzer. I brushed a little shimmering blush onto the apples of my cheeks and swiped a shimmery golden primer across my lids. I put on some waterproof mascara and used a hybrid lipstick/stain for bright color with lasting power. I love hot pink, but I think red would be perfect for a Minnie outfit too. Five minutes and done! Next, I pulled my hair up because long hair can get hot and tangled after hours of sun and rides. Voila! Disney makeup to last the day in ten minutes. Easy peasy.

IMG_2403

Mine is a little messy. Don't judge.

I used these tried and true products to get my look –

I hope you feel inspired to try a fun character-inspired look the next time you’re in the parks! Remember, dressing up in character-inspired looks and channeling your inner Disney isn’t just for the kids – grown-ups can share in the fun too.  🙂
